Census 2011

Census is a process 
  • conducted every 10 years.
  • It started in 1871.
  • Census 2011 data was released on 31st March 2011 by Union Home Secretary and RGI of India.
  • Census 2011 was the 15th census of India & 7th census after Independence.
  • The motto of census 2011 was “Our Census, Our future”.
  • Registrar General & Census Commissioner under whom census 2011 was conducted – C.Chandra Mouli

  • Total Population – 1,210,569,573 (1.21 Billion)
  • India in 2nd rank in the population with 17.64%. decadal growth.
  • Increase in population during 2001 – 2011 is 181 Million
  • Number of Administrative Units in Census 2011 States/UTs 35

    Villages 6.41 lakh

The population of the country as per the provisional figures of Census 2011 is 1210.19 million of which 623.72 million (51.54%) are males and 586.46 million (48.46%) are females.

  • Sex ration in India - 940
  • State with Highest Female Sex Ratio- Kerala (1084)
  • State with Lowest Female Sex Ratio- Haryana( 861)
  • UT with Highest Female Sex Ratio- Pondicherry(1038)
  • UT with Lowest Female Sex Ratio- Daman & Diu( 618)
  • Three major States (J&K, Bihar & Gujarat) have shown decline in sex ratio as compared to Census 2001.
Population
  • Uttar Pradesh (199.5 million) is the most populous State in the country followed by Maharashtra with 112 million.

Literacy Rate
  • Total Person Literacy Rate- 74%
  • State with Highest Literacy Rate - Kerala (93.11%) (In September 2013 Tripura topped the literacy rate with with 94.65% per cent)
  • State with Lowest Literacy Rate- Bihar (63.82%)
  • UT with Highest Literacy Rate- Lakshadweep (86.7%)
  • UT with Lowest Literacy Rate- Dadra & Nagar Haveli (57.6%)
  • District with Highest Literacy Rate-AizwalMizoram (96.5%)
  • District with Lowest Literacy Rate-Dantewada Chhattisgarh (30.17%)

The percentage decadal growth rates of the six most populous States have declined during 2001-2011 compared to 1991-2001:
  • Uttar Pradesh (25.85% to 20.09%)
  • Maharashtra (22.73% to 15.99%)
  • Bihar (28.62% to 25.07%)
  • West Bengal (17.77 % to 13.93%)
  • Andhra Pradesh (14.59% to 11.10%)
  • Madhya Pradesh (24.26% to 20.30%)
